The 20th China Plastics Industry Research and Application Forum, themed “Two Decades of Industrial Collaboration for a Greener, Low-Carbon Plastics Future,” recently concluded in Chengdu. The forum was jointly organized by China Bluestar Chenguang Research Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., the College of Polymer Science and Engineering of Sichuan University, and the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Xihua University, with editorial support from Plastics Industry magazine and Shanxi Buyun Cultural Media Co., Ltd.
This three-day industry event brought together 17 top experts from universities, research institutes, and enterprises across the plastics value chain, attracting over 200 industry professionals. The participants explored new innovation paths in sustainable development, high-value recycling, and high-performance plastics technologies. Mr. Ma Yiming, Founder and CEO of Ningbo Topcentral New Material Co., Ltd., was invited to attend the forum.
During the forum, renowned scholars including Prof. Zheng Qiang of Zhejiang University, Prof. Xie Xiaolin of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Prof. Fu Qiang of Sichuan University shared their insights on "Frontiers in Plastics Science and Industrial Transformation." Topics covered included breakthroughs in flexible foldable glass-plastic hybrids, commercialization of bio-based polyesters, source control of microplastic pollution, innovations in holographic plastic processing, and overcoming 3D printing bottlenecks—providing attendees with a feast of academic and industrial perspectives.
Experts and delegates engaged in lively discussions on the opportunities for transforming the plastics industry under China’s “dual carbon” goals, accelerating industry-academia collaboration.
As a key participant in the forum, Ma Yiming, a member of the editorial board of Plastics Industry and CEO of Topcentral®, delivered a keynote titled “Back2Circle Empowers Innovation Across the Circular Materials Value Chain.” His talk outlined Topcentral®’s pioneering work in circular plastics technology, emphasizing the shift from single-point breakthroughs to system-wide innovation amid the global push for decarbonization.
“Circularity is not an option—it’s a necessity for civilization,” said Ma. The Back2Circle system integrates physical and data flows to enable full life-cycle closed-loop tracking and real-time verification. It also lays the groundwork for iCircularALL, a platform for managing the entire physical and digital lifecycle of materials, creating an immersive and intelligent circular ecosystem. Waste plastics are thus reborn into high-performance materials with elevated value.
Opening with a provocative question—“Do we pursue sustainable resource circulation on Earth, or consider migrating to Mars?”—Ma delivered compelling insights on carbon neutrality, infinite circular ecosystems, and carbon tax resilience through Back2Circle and iCarbonALL.
His engaging style and thought-provoking message captivated the audience, as he introduced Topcentral®’s three core innovations:
End-to-End Traceability: Using IoT devices to collect and encrypt data on the source, composition, and sorting process of waste plastics for blockchain storage, ensuring full transparency and traceability.
Industry Chain Collaboration: Creating a closed-loop ecosystem linking designers, producers, recyclers, and end users to commercialize the circular economy.
Digital Empowerment: Building an “industrial internet + digital twin” platform powered by AI and blockchain to assign a “digital ID” to every material from collection to reuse.
The forum not only celebrated 20 years of innovation in China’s plastics industry, but also issued a collective declaration toward the country’s dual-carbon targets. Attendees agreed that enterprises like Topcentral® are driving the low-carbon transformation of plastics through technological and model innovation.
Looking ahead, continued collaboration across academia, industry, and policy will position China’s plastics industry to lead in the global green economy—crafting a new chapter in the dual-carbon era through materials innovation.
Topcentral® specializes in advanced polymer circular technologies, committed to enabling a closed-loop plastic economy through its proprietary Back2Circle system. The company has formed strategic partnerships with leading enterprises, with its recycled materials widely used in consumer electronics and new energy vehicles—helping customers meet carbon reduction goals.
